Augmented Reality for Car Parts

Borg & Beck, one of our clients, has been selling premium automotive components for over 100 years.

We recently used gen AI methods to make the 60,000 photos in their online catalogue look like they were taken yesterday.

The Challenge

Last week they went to a trade show in my hometown Frankfurt. To show off their products, they asked us to build an Augmented Reality (AR) tool that would allow their customers to inspect their pieces as if they held them in their hands. Like so:

Here's a YouTube clip of what their stand looked like. Have a look!

How it works

Borg & Beck sent us 18 of their parts.

We used photogrammetry to create 3D models of them. Photogrammetry is the practice of taking 100s of photos of the object from different angles and letting software stitch them together into a 3D model. Here's an example showing a suspension bearing.

We combined the 3D models with AR technology that recognises your hand and places the part in the palm of your hand.

We wrapped the technology into a web app that can run on the screen at their stand at the trade fare, or on your phone. Try it out!
